The future of Nigeria international Arthur Okonkwo at the Racecourse Ground is once again uncertain, with Wrexham on the brink of confirming the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
According to Sky Sports News, Wrexham and Sunderland have reached a club-to-club agreement for Patterson's transfer, with the goalkeeper travelling to Wales to undergo a routine medical ahead of his unveiling.
Sunderland have agreed to part ways with Patterson two years before the expiration of his contract in exchange for a reported £8 million transfer fee.
Wrexham's imminent signing of the 26-year-old could see Okonkwo drop down the goalkeeping pecking order, with Patterson expected to become the club's first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026-27 season.
Manager Phil Parkinson now faces a major decision over the futures of Okonkwo and Danny Ward, with both goalkeepers in the final year of their contracts.
The Super Eagles goalkeeper was an unused substitute as Wrexham suffered a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in their first competitive game of the new season.
Since joining Wrexham from Arsenal, initially on loan before making the move permanent, Okonkwo has kept 47 clean sheets in 121 appearances.
