The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has asked Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew to step aside following the team’s underwhelming performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The decision was reached by the NFF Executive Committee after an assessment of the team’s performance, particularly the failure to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria missed out on the global tournament after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the qualifying playoffs.
The Super Falcons entered the playoffs after failing to secure an automatic World Cup qualification ticket at the WAFCON.
In a post on X, the NFF confirmed the decision to remove the technical crew with immediate effect.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the federation wrote.
Nigeria endured a difficult campaign at the WAFCON tournament, beginning with a defeat to debutants and eventual finalists Malawi before recovering to progress from the group stage.
However, the quarter-final defeat to Cameroon ended their hopes of defending the continental title and also denied them an automatic route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Following the decision, the NFF will now be keen to restructure the Super Falcons’ technical setup, appoint a new coaching team and restore confidence within the squad ahead of the Olympics tournament.
