Season Five of MTN Football Scholar Begins Next Month
Published: June 03, 2015
Season Five of the MTN Football Scholar youth soccer camp will begin next month in Lagos and Abuja.
The program which was launched in September of 2011 with much fanfare provides a platform for Nigeria’s best student athletes/soccer players that are academically sound to earn scholarships to American universities.
The summer football camps involve daily football training for scholars to hone their skills, acquisition of endorsements from celebrity or established footballer and weekly games between camp players.
During this year’s summer camp, friendly matches will take place between the MTN Football Scholar Team and an unnamed Nigeria Professional Football League team and the Nigeria Under 17 team, the Golden Eaglets.
The MTN Football Scholar Team will also engage the Flying Eagles in a friendly, after they return from the Under 20 World Cup in New Zealand.
The rationale of empowering youth towards achieving their soccer aspirations and academic brilliance is not defeated and progressively, some of the scholars have begun achieving commendable feats.
Achara and Augustine went on intercontinental tour to play for their team against the Tottenham Hotspur youth club in Europe while Ozoh of Holderness won the best player of the year in 2014.
MTN has not only pioneered but set the pace for all other Telecom bodies and corporate organizations to follow in the hybrid of football and academic development.
