Controversial Penalty Saves Dolphins From Defeat
Published: July 05, 2015
Dolphins fought from a goal down to hold Wikki Tourists to a thrilling 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The Pride of Rivers needed a contentious late penalty to level the scores after Wikki had taken a 58th lead through Mubarak Umar.
Dolphins came into the game determined to grab the maximum points after a disappointing loss to Elkanemi Warriors on Wednesday.
Wikki were in no mood at all to give anything away as they came prepared with only one thing on their mind – win the game to record a positive result away from home.
The hosts dominated the first half but found it difficult to convert the numerous chances that came their way.
Umar however opened the deadlock for Wikki in the 58th minute when he caught out Sunday Rotimi with a powerful angled pile drive
Dolphins could have equalized but for their profligacy in front of goal. Wikki also had their moments but their chances were few and far in between.
The visitors were reduced to ten men when Omoh Johnson was brought down at the edge of the area by Peter Ambrose.
And when it appeared defeat for the Pride of Rivers was inevitable, referee Alaba Abiodun awarded a contentious penalty on the 88th minute mark.
Defender Victor Ezuruike stepped up to score with aplomb, firing his effort beyond goalkeeper Haliru Sani to earn a face-saving draw for the hosts.
