Exclusive: Chelsea Star Mikel Reacts To Reports He Demanded Super Eagles Captaincy From Musa
Published: April 01, 2016
Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has moved quickly to dismiss reports in the local media that he pressured Ahmed Musa and interim coach of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia to be appointed skipper of the national team.
Based on the reports, Mikel had threatened not to honour the African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt if he was not given the armband.
But his representative has picked holes in the story, stressing that the player would have featured in both games prior to his appointment.
“The story is false and I don’t know what the writer wants to achieve,” Mikel’s adviser told allnigeriasoccer.com.
“Mikel did not even know he was going to be appointed captain before he arrived the Super Eagles camp. He only came to camp based on his invitation, they are only trying to create trouble.”
Just last week, CSKA Moscow frontman Ahmed Musa revealed that he willingly gave the armband to Mikel and stated that seniority was overlooked by Sunday Oliseh when he was appointed skipper.
