Sunderland's Nigerian Wonderkid Picked In Sweden Team For U21 EURO
Published: June 02, 2017
Sunderland wonderkid of Nigerian heritage Joel Asoro has been selected in the Swedish squad for this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Poland.
The 18-year-old, who is the youngest-ever player of Nigerian descent to feature in the English Premier League, made his debut for Sweden U21s in their 1-1 draw with Spain in September 2016, and has been capped three times at that level.
Head coach Håkan Ericson has explained that he picked Asoro because his pace will cause problems for opposition defenses.
''Joel belongs to the fastest players in Sweden. He started our match against Spain at home, it was probably unexpected to many, " said Ericson.
The defending champions start the tournament with a game against England at Kolporter Arena, Kielce on June 16, before facing Poland (June 19) and Slovakia (June 22).
Joel Asoro was nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy and Premier League 2 Player Of The Season in 2017.
