Key Chelsea Midfielder To Undergo Fitness Test Ahead Of Champions League Tie
Published: September 11, 2017
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has hinted that new signing Danny Drinkwater will undergo a late fitness test ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League clash against Azerbaijani side Qarabag at Stamford Bridge.
The Manchester United product watched proceedings from the bench as the Premier League champions beat the Foxes 2-1 at the King Power Stadium on Saturday evening.
Drinkwater will be key to Chelsea if he gets the green light from Chelsea medics, as he has Champions League experience under his belt having represented Leicester ten times in the competition last season.
Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon, Conte stated : ''One news, Danny Drinkwater had a muscular problem in his calf. We are waiting to check on the problem.''
Belgian star Eden Hazard is expected to be named in the match day squad against Qarabag after recovering from an ankle injury.
Conte added : ''He is in the group, in the squad and is working well to find the best physical condition.
''He needs a bit of time to continue to improve and we must not take a stupid risk with him. He will come on to the bench. ''
Qarabag first team and their U19 squad flew to the English capital on Sunday, September 10.
