Rohr Used His Influence For GK Uzoho To Train With Deportivo La Coruña First Team
Published: May 16, 2018
Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr deserves commendation after using his influence to ensure that goalkeeper Francis Uzoho trains with Deportivo de La Coruña first-teamers ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
The former Nigeria U17 reserve goalkeeper is the undisputed first choice goalie of La Coruña's reserve team, Deportivo Fabril, but is often invited by manager Clarence Seedorf to train with the main team ahead of La Liga matches.
''He is a young lad, experience comes with playing games and being exposed to friendly matches and that's what the coaches have been doing with Francis Uzoho, not just Francis, with the other goalkeepers as well Ezenwa and Akpeyi,'' Toyin Ibitoye, Super Eagles Media Officer, told Channels Television.
''A lot of work has gone in. The goalkeeper coach that is in Europe, Enrico Pionetti, is following up on Uzoho.
''Gernot Rohr has also used his clout to ensuring that Uzoho is allowed to train with the A team of Deportivo de La Coruña, that gives him a lot of exposure and toughness. The same thing with Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Alloy Agu has been on his case, the medical people have also been following up with him.
''We have goalkeepers that are prepared, psyched up to go out there to achieve success for us.''
On October 15, 2017, Francis Uzoho debuted in La Liga, keeping a clean-sheet against SD Eibar and became the youngest foreign goalkeeper to debut in the league, before making his international debut against Argentina a month later.
