Mainz Coach Refuses To Reveal Whether Liverpool-Owned Striker Awoniyi Will Extend Contract
Published: June 08, 2020
Mainz 05 coach Achim Beierlorzer has refused to reveal whether Taiwo Awoniyi will extend his contract with the German Bundesliga club at the end of the 2019-2020 season.
The former Flying Eagles star has forced his way into reckoning since the resumption of the league, starting the last three matches played by Mainz and was substituted in on two occasions.
Liverpool have continued to loan out Awoniyi since he joined the club in August 2015 because he is not eligible to be granted a work permit to play in the Premier League and it is believed his status won't change next season.
Speaking to Kicker, Beierlorzer stated : "Taiwo said in January that he didn't want to move again, he feels comfortable and understood with us. After that, he just kept working on himself".
When asked on the possibility of Mainz extending Awoniyi's contract, Beierlorzer said he was more concerned about Mainz beating the drop.
"Before we have reached our goal, for which we still have to collect points, there are no discussions."
Awoniyi previously spent time on loan at FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Royal Excel Mouscron and KAA Gent, before joining Mainz on a season-long loan last August.
