Southampton's Nathan Tella Shows Glimpses Of Potential In Win Against Liverpool
Published: January 05, 2021
Former Arsenal trainee Nathan Tella showed glimpses of his potential as Southampton defeated reigning champions Liverpool 1-0 at the St Mary's Stadium on Monday night.
Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl introduced the Super Eagles target in the 32nd minute as a replacement for Moussa Djenepo, who succumbed to a hamstring injury.
It was Tella's sixth appearance in the top-flight as a substitute since making his debut against Norwich City in June 2020.
The home team took the lead inside two minutes as Danny Ings lifted the ball over goalkeeper Alisson with his left foot following a well worked free-kick routine.
Nine minutes after his introduction, Tella came close to doubling the lead when he bent a low shot past Alisson after getting past three Liverpool players on the edge of the box, only for it to go just wide of the post.
The Saints put up a great defensive performance to prevent Liverpool from finding the back of the net.
Southampton have climbed to sixth in the table with 29 points, four less than their opponents today Liverpool who lead the way.
