'That's a lot of money' - Italian pundit questions transfer fee Napoli paid for Osimhen
Published: March 23, 2021Italian pundit Maurizio Pistocchi has questioned the transfer fee Napoli agreed with Lille for the signing of Victor Osimhen last summer.
The 2015 U17 World Cup winner became the most expensive Nigerian player in history after joining the Blues for a fee of 70 million euros but if performance-related bonuses are included it could rise to 80 million euros.
Osimhen moved on to bigger things after scoring 18 goals for Lille but has struggled to replicate his performances of last season, with only 3 goals after 19 matches for Napoli.
In quotes relayed by Area Napoli making reference to 1 Station Radio during the program 'Il Sogni nel Cuore', Pistocchi explained : "Very expensive players have been bought who did not give what they hoped for.
"Victor Osimhen cost 75 million euros: that's a lot of money. He had to make a difference.
"I had seen him in the Champions League. , with Lille he seemed very strong on the counterattack in the open field, but not equipped with a great technique to play in more chosen spaces: which instead Dries Mertens has".
Osimhen has done well for Nigeria since moving to Napoli, the number 9 was involved in three goals in the Super Eagles 4-4 draw with Sierra Leone last November.
