Super Eagles playmaker Iwobi late inclusion in Everton's starting lineup in defeat to Aston Villa
Published: May 02, 2021
Alex Iwobi was a late inclusion in Everton's starting lineup as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in an English Premier League clash at Goodison Park on Saturday night.
The Super Eagles playmaker was initially named among the substitutes but manager Carlo Ancelotti made a change to the starting lineup, with Iwobi coming in for James Rodriguez, who picked up a calf niggle in the warm-up.
The Toffees' hopes of a Europa League place were damaged again by yet another defeat at Goodison Park - their eighth home defeat this season.
The first chance of the game fell to Iwobi, who cut inside and saw his low drive deflected.
Ollie Watkins set Aston Villa on their way in the 13th minute but the lead lasted only six minutes as Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out his effort.
Despite some brilliant saves by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who kept Aston Villa at bay, it was Anwar El-Ghazi who had the final say with ten minutes left on the clock.
Iwobi and his teammates missed the opportunity to go into the top six in the Premier League following the loss to Aston Villa.
