Two Nigeria targets named in Germany squad for 2020 Olympic Games
Published: July 05, 2021
The German Football Association (DFB) on Monday announced a 19-man roster for the 2020 Olympic Games taking place in Tokyo, Japan, with two central defenders heavily courted by the Nigerian Federation making the cut.
Jordan Torunarigha (Hertha BSC) and Felix Uduokhai (FC Augsburg) are among the six players listed as defenders in the 19-man group.
Uduokhai making the squad list came as a surprise as he has not played competitively for more than two months due to an ankle tendon injury.
He is eligible to feature in the Olympic Games because he was born after January 1, 1997.
The Annaberg-Buchholz native has appeared in ten matches for Germany's youth teams since making his debut for the U19s back in November 2016.
Torunarigha also had injury issues last season, limiting his appearances to fourteen in all competitions, compared to the 23 he made in 2019-2020.
The 23-year-old has 27 games under his belt for Germany U16, U18, U19, U20 and U21 teams.
Germany will do battle with Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Ivory Coast in Group D of the 2020 Olympic Games.
