'Solid first performance' - Carney hails Brentford's Onyeka after starring on Premier League debut
Published: August 13, 2021Brentford started their Premier League campaign with a shock but deserved 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Brentford Community Stadium on Friday night courtesy of goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Noorgaard.
The Bees smashed their transfer record twice this summer with the signings of Frank Onyeka from FC Midtjylland and Kristoffer Ajer from Glasgow Celtic.
Brentford looked fitter and sharper than their illustrious opponents who dominated possession but without an end product.
Nigeria international Onyeka had a debut he will not forget in a hurry as he made his mark throughout his duration on the pitch.
The defensive midfielder came close to breaking the deadlock but his looping header went wide in the 12th minute.
A very young Arsenal side showed lack of leadership and experience as they were bullied by Onyeka and his Brentford teammates.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal winger Karen Carney, who was on commentary duties for the Premier League world feed, was impressed with the performance of Onyeka, praising him as he made his way off the pitch in the 80th minute.
The retired Three Lioness said : "He has done well, made forward passing runs, earned him a standing ovation. Solid first performance from him".
One-cap Nigeria international Onyeka signed a five-year contract with Brentford last month.
