Newcastle United interested in signing left-footed Nigeria-eligible central defender
Published: August 23, 2021Newcastle United are interested in signing left-footed Nigeria-eligible central defender Jordan Torunarigha, according to reports.
German broadcaster Sport1 informs via its website that the Magpies are plotting a move for the former Germany youth international but face competition from the Serie A in the form of Atalanta.
Torunarigha is frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities in the new season, logging only six minutes from a possible 180 in all competitions.
The German-Nigerian is behind Márton Dárdai, Niklas Stark and Dedryck Boyata in manager Pal Dardai's pecking order of central defenders.
He is not short of suitors as Bundesliga clubs are also monitoring the situation of the defender, apart from Newcastle United and Atalanta.
Torunarigha has played nonstop at Hertha Berlin for fifteen years and is credited with 75 senior appearances for the capital club, scoring six goals.
A member of Germany's squad to the 2020 Olympic Games, he was involved in all the three matches played by his country of birth during the competition held in Japan.
Torunarigha is under contract with Hertha Berlin until the end of the 2022-2023 season.
