Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr was delighted to see his pupil Samuel Kalu score a wonder goal that earned Bordeaux a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw with Montpellier on Wednesday.
After Valère Germain and Florent Mollet found the net to give Montpellier a 3-2 lead, it was Bordeaux's substitute Kalu who equalised in spectacular fashion, showing great skill in the box to evade the challenge of three defenders before firing home to level things up with five minutes left on the clock.
The Nigerian's strike was his first of the campaign and his first in Bordeaux colours since February 27, 2021 when he netted a consolation versus Metz.
Kalu has seen injuries limit him to a mere five games for the national team since the conclusion of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nation but the winger is one of the Super Eagles players Rohr counts on when in good shape.
"Personally, I was very happy for Kalu because I have him with Nigeria. This will give him confidence," Rohr said on France Bleu Gironde via webgirondins.
"It's a good thing for the Girondins to have this kind of attacker, but we absolutely have to strengthen the defense."
Barring an injury, it is a foregone conclusion that Kalu will be included in the Super Eagles squad for their upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Central African Republic.
