Eredivisie basement team priced out of move for Super Eagles striker, sporting director reveals
Dutch Eredivisie basement team PEC Zwolle were interested in signing one-cap Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers in the summer transfer window but could not afford him, sporting director of the Blauwvingers, Mike Willems has revealed.

Racing Genk's permanent acquisition of Canada international Ike Ugbo from Chelsea saw Dessers fall further down the pecking order of strikers at the Limburg club.

In 2020-2021, Dessers played a bit part role for Genk due to the remarkable form of Paul Onuachu, starting only six out of a possible forty matches in the Belgian First Division A.

The hierarchy at the Belgian Cup winners allowed him to leave on loan in search of regular first team opportunities.

Dessers was heavily linked with a transfer to Spanish second-tier club CD Leganes before making an under-the-radar loan transfer to Feyenoord on deadline day.

"We have done everything we can to bring in experienced players with scoring ability," says sporting director Mike Willems at Voetbal International via voetbalbelgie.

"We wanted to go far for guys like Virgil Misidjan, Michel Vlap and Cyriel Dessers, but we couldn't afford it."

Former NAC Breda, FC Utrecht and Heracles Almelo star Dessers has gotten his mojo back since returning to the Netherlands, scoring seven goals in fifteen matches for Feyenoord.
