Two League One clubs and Motherwell interested in Chelsea's Nigeria-eligible midfielder
Published: January 12, 2022Tariq Uwakwe could be leaving Chelsea before the close of the January transfer window with reports linking him with possible moves to League One and Scottish Premiership teams.
Football Insider says Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth are among multiple clubs in League One interested in signing the left-footed Nigeria-eligible midfielder.
Pompey and the Owls face competition from Motherwell in the race for the services of Uwakwe who has been on the books of Chelsea for thirteen years.
Uwakwe has entered the final six months of his contract with the Blues and the European champions are willing to let him leave the club permanently if a sell-on clause is included in the deal.
He enjoyed a taste of first team football during a season-long loan spell
at League One club Accrington Stanley, for whom he made 21 appearances
in all competitions in 2020-2021.
The 22-year-old can be deployed as a wing-back, central midfielder, attacking midfielder, defensive midfielder and left midfielder.
Uwakwe trialed at Sheffield Wednesday in July 2021 but nothing came out of it.
