Forest Green Rovers mulling over signing released Celtic Irish-Nigerian striker
Published: July 22, 2022EFL League One newcomers Forest Green Rovers are mulling over signing former Republic of Ireland U21 international of Nigerian descent Jonathan Afolabi.
Gloucestershire Live says Afolabi is on the radar of Forest Green Rovers having recently trained with the club.
The 22-year-old is currently unemployed after his contract with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic expired at the end of last month.
His search for a new club has seen him train with Portsmouth in pre-season but a transfer has not materialized as of now despite catching the eye in a friendly against Qatar SC in which he netted the opening goal in a 2-0 win.
Afolabi failed to break into the first team of Celtic and was instead shipped off on loan to four different clubs namely Dunfermline Athletic, Dundee, Ayr United and Airdrieonians.
The striker is aiming to return to English football with either Portsmouth or Forest Green Rovers, three years after he was surprisingly released by Southampton.
He spent the formative years of his career at Shamrock Rovers, Lourdes Celtic, and St Joseph's Boys in his native Ireland.
