Arsenal 1 Brentford 2 : Two Nigerians on show as Gunners' 100 percent pre-season record ends
Published: July 27, 2022Arsenal played against Brentford in a behind-closed-doors pre-season game at London Colney today with the Gunners succumbing to a narrow 2-1 defeat to the Bees, the first game they have failed to win in pre-season.
The Gunners were on a five-game winning streak, having registered victories against Ipswich Town, Nürnberg, Everton, Orlando City and Chelsea, before the visit of Brentford to their training ground.
Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka made Brentford's starting line-up while Nigeria-eligible defender Zach Awe started on the bench and came on at halftime to replace fellow youngster Reuell Walters.
Onyeka who played the full ninety minutes was instrumental in midfield as Brentford took the lead just ten minutes into the game as Fin Stevens flicked on a ball into the path of Trevitt who crossed the ball across for Mbeumo to finish.
Arsenal then equalised through Eddie Nketiah in the 24th minute after good combinational play from Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland Niles.
Awe came on after the break for Walters and he was instrumental in tightening up the defence and helping the Gunners to circulate the ball effectively.
Arsenal remained on top for the majority of the second half but were unable to find an equaliser.
Onyeka would be hoping to build on his twenty Premier League appearances for the Bees last season while Awe would be hoping to get noticed by the watchful eye of Mikel Arteta next season for lesser important games.
