Sydney Super Cup :  Celtic boss hands minutes to Nigeria-eligible CB in loss to A-League side

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou handed minutes to Republic of Ireland U21 international of Nigerian descent Bosun Lawal as his side were beaten 2-1 by A-League side Sydney FC in their opening match of the Sydney Super Cup.

The Australian football tactician has taken the talented central defender to Australia, where they will play back-to-back games against Sydney FC and Premier League side Everton.

Lawal is knocking on the first team door, having trained with the senior squad on multiple occasions this season and was also involved in their preparations for the 2022-2023 season.

The absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers, who is with the United States national team in Qatar, and doubts over the fitness of Moritz Jenz opened the door for Lawal to make the traveling squad to Australia.

Jenz suffered a head knock during the first half of Celtic's  2-1 victory over Ross County on Saturday.

At the  Allianz Stadium in Sydney, honours were even at the end of the first half as Róbert Mak canceled out Kyogo Furuhashi's opener within three minutes.

On the hour mark, Burgess curled a left-footed shot into the top comer for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Lawal, wearing the number 50 at the back of his jersey, entered the game as a substitute in the 78th minute, replacing Stephen Welsh.
