George Weah's African record : Osimhen one step away from making Serie A history

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is one step away from making history as the top scoring African player in the history of the Italian SerIe A.

The Nigeria international extended his lead at the top of the scoring charts by netting his nineteenth goal of the season as Napoli registered a 2-0 road win over Empoli at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Saturday evening.

Empoli's Albanian center back Ardian Ismajli put the ball into his own net in the 17th minute to give Napoli the lead.

Twenty eight minutes into the contest, Osimhen was in the right place to tap in after a rebound fell kindly to his path.

And in doing so, he took his tally in the Serie A to 43 goals in 71 matches, a tally bettered only by AC Milan great George Weah among African players.

The Liberia legend is the African player with the most goals in the history of the Serie A with 46 goals in 114 appearances and Osimhen is next, ahead of Senegal center forward Keita Baldé and Ivorian star Franck Kessié who are both on 41 goals and no longer active in the Serie A.

With his strike against Empoli, Osimhen (24 years and 58 days) became the second youngest player to score in eight consecutive matches in the three points for a win era in the Serie A, behind only Roberto Muzzi (23 years and 165 days for Cagliari), according to the statisticians at OPTA.
