Athletic Bilbao sports director Mikel González has reacted to speculation linking the Basque club with a move for Liverpool youth teamer Elijah Gift.

González was careful not to go into too much detail about the proposed deal as the Spanish-born winger with Nigerian and Cuban background is a minor.

Matching press reports in England and Spain have suggested that Gift will join Athletic Bilbao in the summer transfer window, subject to him passing a tradition medical, with one million euros being mooted as the transfer fee.

The Spanish-Cuban-Nigerian starlet played futsal at Castejón Soccer School , his mother's hometown, before moving to England at the age of nine.

In quotes relayed by Estadio Deportivo, Gonzalez said a few days ago: "He's a minor and we don't have to talk much ... If we're happy with the recruitment, it's because of all the volume of player monitoring.

"That player has a level, but we don't have to give any details until there's something to announce or figures or operations."

Gift was supposed to be entering the second year of his scholarship at Liverpool next season and was also eligible to sign a professional contract with the Anfield club as from June 11, 2023.

Gift was a youth team player at Huddersfield Town for two and a half seasons before joining Liverpool at U12 level.
