New Standard Liege coach to decide whether or not to sign Southampton's Nigeria-eligible winger
Published: June 27, 2023Belgium underage international of Nigerian descent Kazeem Olaigbe has been heavily linked with a transfer to Jupiler Pro League side Standard Liege in the summer transfer window.
Earlier reports had suggested that Olaigbe's transfer to the ten-time Belgian champions was imminent, with the player already agreeing a three-year-deal with the option of an additional season.
But there is a new development. New Standard Liege manager Carl Hoefkens must give the green light to the transfer of the Belgian-Nigerian winger, according to the online edition of French-language Belgian daily newspaper Le Soir.
Hoefkens was appointed as the new coach of Standard Liege eleven days ago, replacing Norwegian football manager Ronny Deila who is now working at Club Brugge.
Per the report, Olaigbe was approached to join Standard Liege prior to the appointment of Hoefkens and it would be necessary to see if he is in the plans of the new coach for the forthcoming season before the proposed deal can be completed.
Considered one of the hottest Belgian prospects, Olaigbe joined Southampton on a scholarship deal in July 2019, before signing a professional contract in January 2020.
The former Anderlecht youth teamer received his first and only call-up to the first team of Southampton in an Emirates FA Cup match against Swansea City in January 2022 but was not utilized off the bench by manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.
