Leicester City and Huddersfield gunning to sign Arsenal's Flying Eagles-eligible CB
Published: June 27, 2023
Zach Awe's days at Premier League side Arsenal are numbered, with the central defender having only three days left on his contract with the Emirates Stadium outfit.
The Flying Eagles-eligible player turned down the offer of a contract extension at the Gunners as he wants to play first-team football next season rather than remaining with the development squad of the Londoners.
According to The Telegraph's Mike McGrath, Leicester City have discussed about signing Awe who is available on a free transfer.
But they face competition for the center back's signature from other Football League clubs including Huddersfield Town.
The Terriers showed early interest in the Anglo-Nigerian youngster before changes behind the scenes.
Awe, a product of the Hale End Academy, played nonstop at the Gunners for more than a decade, having joined the club at U8 level, with the Gunners beating London rivals Crystal Palace to his signature.
In his final season with his boyhood club, the 19-year-old logged 27 appearances combined in the Premier League 2 and Papa Johns Trophy, scoring two goals.
Awe received just one call-up for a first team game during his time at Arsenal and it came in a Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 10, 2022 when he was a non-playing substitute.
