Left-footed Super Eagles defender a transfer target for Brighton & Hove
Published: July 03, 2023Left-footed Super Eagles centre-back Calvin Bassey has been linked with Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.
As revealed by transfer Guru Fabrizio Romano, Albion are targeting a move for the Ajax defender alongside Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Qudus.
The Seagulls want to beef up their defensive options as they prepare for participation in the Europa League next season for the first time in their history.
Levi Colwill who played as one of the left centre backs for Roberto De Zerbi's side last season has returned to Chelsea after the expiration of his loan term and needs to be replaced.
Bassey moved to Ajax Amsterdam from Glasgow Rangers for a guaranteed fee of 23 million euros last summer but had a mixed season in the Eredivisie after losing his spot in the starting lineup following a managerial change.
The 23-year-old arrived in the Netherlands with huge expectations having done brilliantly for Rangers, particularly in the Europa League where he was named in the competition's Team of the Season.
He featured frequently on the bench towards the end of the season where he was an unused substitute in 6 of the last 8 league games.
Bassey has a contract with Ajax Amsterdam until the end of the 2026-2027 season.
