German-born Nigerian RB sends parting message to Chelsea ahead of Southampton move
Published: July 04, 2023
German-born Nigerian right-back Derrick Abu has sent a parting message to Chelsea ahead of his next move.
Abu has agreed terms with English Championship side Southampton and only an official confirmation of the deal is pending.
The defender's departure from Chelsea had earlier been confirmed by the club's retained and released list published on the Premier League website.
The 19-year-old initially joined Chelsea U11s and went on to feature for the club's U18s and development squad.
The versatile defender signed his first professional contract in 2021 but was not able to break into the Blues' first team prior to his release
He has taken to social media to confirm his departure from the London-based side and express his feelings ahead of his imminent transfer to Southampton.
"Been a good decade at Chelsea and I'm truly grateful to the club for everything they have done over the years for me. It is time to close this chapter and continue to write my story. I wish the club all the best for the future. It's time for a new challenge. Till next time blues," Derrick Abu wrote on Instagram
It has been reported that the Saints could lose their right back Tino Livramento this summer as he has been linked with a move to Chelsea and this could provide an opportunity for Abu to get into the Saints first team.
Abu had earlier been linked with a move to Crystal Palace and Brighton before deciding to join the English Championship outfit.
