Ajax part company with ex-Arsenal chief who recommended the signing of Hale End product Akpom
Published: September 25, 2023With a statement on their official website, Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam announced on Sunday that they have ended their collaboration with Director of Football Sven Mislintat with immediate effect.
Ajax Amsterdam stressed that the club's decision to part company with the German talent spotter is unrelated to the forensic accountant investigation announced last Wednesday and added that the lack of broad support within the organisation is the reason behind this decision.
Sven Mislintat, who was formerly Head of Recruitment at Premier League club Arsenal, recommended the signing of Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom from Middlesbrough in the summer transfer window.
Middlesbrough agreed to end their association with the 27-year-old in exchange for a guaranteed fee of €12.3 million, plus two million euros in performance-related add-ons.
The fee has been questioned by some pundits in the Netherlands who argued that the four-time European champions overpaid for Akpom.
Ajax have had a dismal start to the season having accumulated just five points from their opening four games and were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Marseille in the Europa League.
Akpom, top scorer in the EFL Championship last season with 28 goals, has played in three matches since his move to the Amsterdam club.
