'It was a great achievement' - Gift Orban on breaking European record held by Liverpool forward
Published: December 14, 2023Gift Orban has acknowledged it was a delight to break the record for the fastest hat trick scored in the UEFA competition which was previously held by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
The Nigerian forward broke the record in Gent's 4-1 win over İstanbul Başakşehir F.K in the second leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League played in March.
Orban bagged his first goal in the encounter with a close-range finish in the 31st minute, then added to his tally a minute later before getting his third in the 34th minute with a right-footed strike.
He scored the hat trick within 3 minutes and 25 seconds which is faster than that of Salah who bagged his in 6 minutes 12 seconds in Liverpool's Champions League encounter against Rangers last year.
Orban has expressed his joy in breaking the record set by the Egyptian star and is hoping to shatter more.
"I am not really interested in records. I am a player who tried to score three or four goals but by the next morning, I have moved on.
"My focus is on how I am going to improve. I know it was a great achievement but I want more." he told Gent's official YouTube channel
The 21-year-old has been one of the most prolific strikers in the Europa Conference League since making his debut in February.
He is averaging one goal per game in the competition and he is the joint-top scorer this season with 5 goals.
