Ex-Glasgow Rangers coach reveals former Nigeria boss Peseiro introduced him to Mourinho
Published: March 14, 2024
Onetime Glasgow Rangers coach Pedro Caixinha has spoken about his relationship with Jose Mourinho, saying he was introduced to the legendary football tactician by former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.
Peseiro and Mourinho are buddies, with the ex-Roma manager confirming that Peseiro could be regarded as his closest friend in football in an interview he granted before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Mourinho publicly showed his support for his compatriot and Super Eagles to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before the final against hosts Ivory Coast.
Peseiro grew up with Mourinho, studied with him and they both attended the same university.
Speaking to Globo Esporte via Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Pedro Caixinha confirmed that Peseiro and Mourinho have a close relationship, stating, "This relationship (with Mourinho) was created with him by a coach I assisted for a long time, José Peseiro.
"They were college friends. What remained there, through them, was knowledge and this close relationship with a person that I greatly admire.
"He was a fundamental person in making us open (our minds) and see things in a different way and, undoubtedly, with everything he achieved and has to achieve."
Peseiro is currently a free agent after choosing not to extend his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation due to a disagreement on the financial terms of the proposed new deal.
With the Portuguese in the Super Eagles dugout, the national team registered eleven wins, four draws and seven losses in his twenty-two games in charge.
