Leicester working on deal to sign Burkina Faso international as potential replacement for Iheanacho
Published: May 21, 2024
According to Football Insider, Premier League newcomers Leicester City, are interested in signing Burkina Faso international Mohamed Konate as a potential replacement for Kelechi Iheanacho.
The Foxes are bracing up for the departure of Iheanacho whose contract comes to and end next month as well as club legend Jamie Vardy though a contract extension for the latter hasn't been ruled out.
Konate has caught the eye of the Championship winners, having starred for Russian side Akhmat Grozny this season, being the top scorer with 13 goals across all competitions.
The 26-year-old will also become a free agent next month, making him a more appealing prospect for Leicester to beat other suitors to his signature.
Konate is also being linked with Brest and Lyon and with the prospect of playing European football with the two French sides, a move to the one-time Premier League champions could be difficult.
It is all but confirmed that Iheanacho will leave the King Power after seven years and is no short of suitors within and outside England.
The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup winner made 26 appearances across all competitions in the just concluded season and registered six goals and three assists before falling out of favour after his return from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
He only played for 29 minutes since the start of April, coming on as a substitute on two occasions , was an unused substitute twice and didn't make the matchday squad four times.
