Euro 2004: Super Eagles-eligible midfielder named in Italy's provisional squad
Published: May 23, 2024
Super Eagles-eligible midfielder Michael Folorunsho has been included in Italy's provisional 30-man squad for Euro 2024.
This call-up comes after an impressive season for Folorunsho in Serie A, where he scored four goals and provided one assist in 26 appearances for Verona.
Folorunsho, who spent his youth career with Lazio, received his first call-up to the Italian national team in March under coach Luciano Spalletti.
Although he did not make his debut due to fitness concerns, his performances this season seem to have convinced Spalletti to include him in the initial squad for the Euros.
Folorunsho faces stiff competition for a midfield spot in the final 26-man squad. Established stars like Jorginho (Arsenal) and Nicolo Barella (Inter Milan) are already in the mix.
However, Folorunsho's recent form and versatility could see him challenge for a place in the final squad, which must be submitted by midnight on June 7.
Italy, the reigning European champions, will be looking to defend their title in Germany this summer.
Folorunsho will be hoping to impress in upcoming friendlies against Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina and stake his claim for a place in the final squad.
The former Lazio youth player served loan spells at Reggina and Bari, before agreeing to join Hellas Verona last summer featuring thirty-four times in all competition for the gialloblu whilst also registering six goal contributions (five goals and one assist) along the way.
