'The Gunners wanted Sesko' - Transfer market expert reckons Arsenal will reignite Osimhen interest
Published: June 17, 2024English Premier League club Arsenal are reportedly poised to reignite their pursuit of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen after missing out on Benjamin Sesko, who opted to extend his stay at RB Leipzig.
Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, reportedly desires a departure from Napoli this summer, despite his €130 million release clause.
RAI's transfer market expert Ciro Venerato expressed Arsenal's intention to approach Napoli again in the coming days for Osimhen, albeit at a reduced fee from his release clause.
In quotes relayed by Napoli magazine, Venerato said: "Arsenal will make an attempt with Napoli in the next few days after many rumors.
"The Gunners wanted Sesko who instead decided to stay at Leipzig Now they will try with the Nigerian (who dreams of the Premier League) not paying the onerous amount of the clause, but a lower sum."
While Arsenal aim to negotiate a lower transfer fee, Napoli will need to assess their options carefully.
The Italian side may find it easier to strike a deal with other interested parties like clubs in the Middle East or PSG.
However, Osimhen reportedly prefers a move to the Premier League, adding to the intrigue of the impending negotiations.
"Napoli will have to evaluate the pros and cons. Easier to reach an agreement with the Arabs or PSG (annoyed by the no to Kvara) but Victor favors the United Kingdom," Venerato added.
Currently on break to recover from an injury suffered at the end of the 2023-2024 season, Osimhen recently criticized former Super Eagles coach Finidi George.
This came in response to a publication where Finidi reportedly questioned Osimhen's commitment to the national team and suggested he selectively chose the matches he played for Nigeria.
