Super Falcons roster update: Onumonu moved to 18-player squad; Otu invited as alternate player
Published: July 10, 2024
It is no news that the Super Falcons will miss the services of midfielder Halimatu Ayinde at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
She picked up an injury during a training session with her clubs FC Rosengård which has now ruled her out of the tournament.
As a result, Coach Randy Waldrum has decided to call upon Utah Royals forward Ifeoma Onumonu as a replacement for Ayinde.
Onumonu alongside Jumoke Alani, Gift Monday and Morufa Ademola were named to the initial alternate list by Waldrum and the 30-year-old is now set to move to the substantive 18-player squad.
With the Utah Royals forward being moved to the main squad, Regina Otu has been named as her replacement on the alternate list.
Besides Ayinde, the Super Falcons will also be without England-born defender Ashleigh Plumptre and Waldrum will now be hoping that no other player picks up an injury before the start of the tournament.
The nine-time African champions have started their preparation for the competition at Jerez de la Frontera in Spain and are set to play a friendly game with reigning Olympic champion Canada today.
The Super Falcons haven't participated in the Olympic Games since 2008 and are now set to end their wait to participate in the competition.
They will kick-start their campaign with a game against Brazil on July 25 before facing world champions Spain and then Japan in their last group game.
