'I have a style' - Galatasaray coach Buruk reveals how he convinced Osimhen to join Super Lig giants
Published: September 04, 2024
Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk has shed light on how he successfully persuaded Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to join the Turkish Super Lig giants, following a tumultuous transfer saga over the summer.
Osimhen, who was heavily linked with moves to Al Ahli and Chelsea on transfer deadline day, ultimately chose to join Galatasaray on a season-long loan.
Osimhen's potential move to Al Ahli collapsed after Napoli reportedly requested additional money beyond the initial agreement, which was set between €75 to €80 million.
The Saudi club withdrew from negotiations due to the increased financial demand.
Chelsea also failed in their pursuit of the striker, despite submitting about four proposals, all of which fell short of meeting Osimhen's wage expectations at the Premier League side.
After the close of the summer transfer window in the big European leagues, Galatasaray stepped in and secured Osimhen on a loan deal, agreeing to cover all his wages.
Speaking on how he convinced the Nigerian international, Coach Okan Buruk revealed that he had a personal conversation with Osimhen, during which he outlined his tactical vision and playing style.
Buruk explained that his approach involves a two-striker system, which appealed to Osimhen.
"I have a style and a method, like a video chat with a footballer on the phone," Buruk told Milliyet via Napoli Magazine.
"I have a style and a method, like a video chat with a footballer on the phone... I spoke to Osimhen and he was convinced.
"He found it very exciting to come to Galatasaray. I already had the idea of playing with a double striker. Such an opportunity should not be missed."
Osimhen is also part of the Nigerian squad invited for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
He is expected to join his Super Eagles teammates in Uyo ahead of the clash against Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7.
