'Lots of power and speed' - Fulham defender Andersen hails Dorgu ahead of potential debut for Denmark
Published: September 05, 2024
Lecce defender of Nigerian descent Patrick Dorgu is in line to make his debut for Denmark on Thursday evening when they do battle with Switzerland in a UEFA Nations League tie at Parken in Copenhagen.
For the first time in his career, Dorgu has received a call-up to Denmark's senior national team for the internationals in September against Switzerland and Serbia.
Although the two matches are competitive, the 19-year-old will still be eligible to represent the Super Eagles after this month's international break because he is an U21 player.
FIFA's eligibility rules state that a player can play up to three matches at senior level and switch his international allegiance to another country provided the three games were played before he turned 21.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Fulham central defender Joachim Andersen, one of the leaders in the Danish team, is looking forward to seeing Dorgu and two other new faces make their debuts for The Red and Whites.
Morten Frendrup and Albert Grønbæk are the other possible debutants in Denmark's squad.
"I see they have a lot of energy. They have a lot of audacity, and they are slightly different types of players than we have seen in the national team in the last several years," Andersen told reporters.
"Dorgu is an offensive back with lots of power and speed. He is left-footed, which helps us a lot. We also have VK, who is left-footed, but Dorgu is a bit more offensive."
Dorgu played his first competitive game for Denmark's youth teams in a European U19 Championship qualifier with Georgia in September 2022, making him provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth.
