Everton confirm squad number for versatile Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne ahead of WSL opener
Published: September 20, 2024With a statement on their official website, Everton have confirmed the squad numbers for the 2024-2025 season ahead of their Women's Super League opener against Brighton & Hove at Broadfield Stadium in West Sussex.
Toni Payne ended her six-year association with Sevilla in Spain to become the first signing of the summer transfer window for Brian Sorensen’s side.
The Toffees have announced that the Super Falcons star will be wearing the number 9 on the back of her jersey for the forthcoming campaign.
Being handed the number 9 kit suggests Payne would lead the line for Everton in the new season, but she's versatile enough to play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger, second striker and has played as a makeshift left-back for the national team.
Her versatility can be a significant asset for Everton in the upcoming season as it allows the coach to use her in different roles depending on the tactical needs of the team.
Payne was assigned number 11 during her time with Sevilla, while she wore number 19 at Ajax Amsterdam.
The 29-year-old was Nigeria's number 7 at the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, which she retained at the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup and 2024 Olympic Games.
Clare Wheeler, Emma Bissell and Heather Payne have been assigned Everton's number 7, 11 and 19 jersey respectively.
