Bayer Leverkusen beat AC Milan thanks to Boniface goal; Chukwueze subbed in; Tella debuts
Published: October 01, 2024Victor Boniface scored the only goal as Bayer Leverkusen defeated AC Milan 1-0 on matchday two of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night at the BayArena.
The Super Eagles striker grabbed the only goal of the game in the 51st minute, tapping Jeremie Frimpong's rebound shot home after it was parried by Mike Maignan.
He had initially found the back of the net earlier in the first half, striking Frimpong's pass into the top corner but it was ruled out by the VAR.
His goal against the Rossoneri was his first in the Champions League, doing so in his second appearance in the competition.
According to Sofascore, he had 34 touches of the ball, completed 42% of his passes, completed two dribbles, won three group duels, and made one tackle and one clearance before he was substituted.
Xabi Alonso brought him off in the 75th minute, and Martin Terrier came on as his replacement as the Spanish boss sought to introduce some fresh legs and rest him ahead of the weekend's game against Holstein Keil.
The 23-year-old didn't score in the opening game against Feyenoord but caught attention for his fake-shot pass, a skill made famous by Arsenal icon Thierry Henry.
Samuel Chukwueze also featured for AC Milan in the game, coming on as a replacement for Christian Pulisic.
Another Super Eagles forward Nathan Tella came off the bench in the 89th minute for his Champions League debut.
