Bayer Leverkusen coach responds to video of Boniface checking Instagram while driving at 140 km/h
Published: November 29, 2024
Victor Boniface is once again in the spotlight following the release of a video that showed the Bayer Leverkusen striker using a mobile phone while driving his Mercedes-AMG car on the A4.
The video, initially posted on Instagram by Nigerian rapper Zoro Swagbag, has now been taken down.
According to German newspaper, Bild, the video showed Boniface driving at 140 km/h using his mobile phone, and he appeared to be reading comments on Instagram and Bayer Leverkusen's starting line-up post before their Champions League match against Salzburg.
The video capturing Boniface using his phone while driving doesn't seem to trouble him, even though this act is banned in Germany and punishable by a minimum fine of €128.50 and one point under the 2024 regulations.
Boniface was involved in a car accident as a passenger just six weeks ago, escaping with minor injuries after the car overturned.
The 23-year-old did not feature for Bayer Leverkusen in their last two games due to a thigh injury he suffered during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Rwanda on November 18.
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he will hold talks with Boniface following the release of the video that showed him driving a car at high speed while using his mobile phone.
In quotes relayed by SPIEGEL Sport, he said: "It's obviously not good, and it's not allowed either. That doesn't have to happen.
"I haven't seen Boni yet. He knows, but we have to tell him again. That's not right."
Before his injury layoff, Boniface was in excellent form for Bayer Leverkusen, netting eight goals in fifteen appearances across all competitions.
