What Uefa's Player of the Match Lookman said after scoring for Atalanta against Real Madrid
Published: December 11, 2024
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has expressed optimism despite Atalanta's hard-fought 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid at the Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League.
Lookman was named UEFA's Player of the Match, with Uefa's Technical Observer Panel highlighting that he was a constant threat to the Real Madrid defence, showcasing fantastic close control when dribbling and coming up with a superb strike for his goal.
Speaking after the match, Lookman acknowledged the challenge of facing the Spanish giants but highlighted his team's positives.
"Tough match today, they took their opportunities when they had them. They are a very quality team; we knew it would be difficult. We were unlucky, but we leave with our heads held high," Lookman was quoted as saying by Tuttomercatoweb.
He also reflected on his personal contribution and the team's collective effort: "I always try to give my best and create opportunities for others, as others do for me. A lot of good things, but also some things to learn from. We have another game on Saturday and hopefully we can win it."
Despite the loss, Lookman sees the game as a significant learning experience for the squad.
"Yes, another big step for us. Today in some moments we showed great quality, it will be important not to get too depressed and start again."
Lookman’s individual form continues to shine this season. The 27-year-old has delivered an impressive tally of 11 goals and 5 assists in just 18 appearances across all competitions, solidifying his reputation as a key player for Gian Piero Gasperini's side.
Atalanta will now shift focus to their domestic campaign as they prepare for their next match against Cagliari Calcio on Saturday, hoping to bounce back and build on their Champions League performance.
