Fulham ace Iwobi joins Chelsea, Man Utd, Newcastle stars in BBC's PL Team of the Week
Published: January 17, 2025
Alex Iwobi has earned a spot in the BBC's Premier League Team of the Week for gameweek 21 despite Fulham's 3-2 loss to West Ham United at the London Stadium.
BBC pundit and former Watford striker Troy Deeney has picked his Best XI, with the Nigeria international making the cut.
Iwobi continued his rich vein of form by scoring his second brace of the season, taking his tally for the campaign to seven goals from twenty-four outings across all competitions.
Five minutes into the second half, he scored when his cross from the left wing evaded West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who was distracted by Mexican striker Raúl Jiménez.
Iwobi's second goal was almost a carbon copy of his first, as the winger flighted the ball past the goalkeeper and Harry Wilson before it found its way into the net at minute 78.
In a 4-3-3 formation, Deeney has picked Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels as the goalkeeper, with a back four consisting of Chelsea's Reece James, Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa and Fulham's Antonee Robinson.
Joining Iwobi in midfield are Sandro Tonali (Newcastle) and Carlos Soler (West Ham), while Phil Foden (Manchester City), Amad Diallo (Manchester United) and Alexander Isak (Newcastle) are the attackers.
Explaining his choice of Iwobi, Deeney stated: "He got another couple of goals and has probably been Fulham's best player throughout. He can play numerous positions but he has just been really, really good.
"He's one of those people that we disrespect and underappreciate but if he was in your team, you would love him to death. He's had a really good week."
Iwobi has registered ten goal involvements, including three assists, in the Premier League this season, surpassing his personal best set in both the 2018-2019 and 2022-2023 campaigns.
