2007-born midfielder of Nigerian descent makes senior debut for Tottenham in win v Hoffenheim
Published: January 23, 2025
Callum Olusesi, the London born Nigerian midfielder, marked his UEFA Europa League debut on Thursday night as Tottenham Hotspur claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim in Germany.
Spurs secured the win thanks to a brace from Heung-min Son and a goal from James Maddison, despite a spirited second-half comeback from the hosts.
The win keeps Tottenham Hotspur on course for qualification to the next round.
Olusesi, who started the match on the bench, finally made his much-anticipated debut in the 89th minute, replacing James Maddison.
The 2007-born midfielder had previously been included in the matchday squad on sixteen occasions without making his debut for Tottenham.
The young talent, renowned for his creativity and versatility, has been a standout performer in Tottenham's youth setup this season, netting four goals in nine Premier League 2 matches.
His performances caught the eye of manager Ange Postecoglou, who rewarded his consistency with a senior debut.
During his brief cameo, Olusesi completed all four of his attempted passes with just four touches, offering a glimpse of his technical ability and composure under pressure.
While his debut was short, Olusesi will undoubtedly draw inspiration from the opportunity and look to build on it as Tottenham progress through the season.
With Postecoglou showing faith in the academy graduate, the young midfielder could play an increasingly important role in upcoming fixtures.
Tottenham's next Europa League game is a crucial one as they seek to maintain a place in the top eight, and Olusesi will aim to capitalize on this momentum to earn more minutes and continue his rapid rise.
