'We have great forwards' - Eric Chelle confident Super Eagles can end Rwanda hoodoo in Kigali
Published: March 21, 2025
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has expressed optimism about his team's chances of securing a crucial victory against Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria will face the Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday, aiming to bounce back from recent struggles against the Rwandan side.
The Super Eagles have failed to defeat Rwanda in their last two meetings, managing a 1-1 draw in Kigali before suffering a 2-1 defeat in Uyo during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
However, despite these setbacks, Chelle remained confident that his team has what it takes to secure all three points.
"I think it is tough for the two teams. I said earlier that Rwanda has a great team. They have a new coach and he's a good coach," Chelle stated during a press conference.
The Malian tactician emphasized the importance of staying focused, particularly given Nigeria's attacking strength.
"I knew that my team must be focused in our game. Captain said we have great forwards. So, we need to be focused on our game and show what we are working on the training session. After that there is no problem."
Chelle also cautioned his players against complacency, warning them to be mindful of the unpredictable nature of football.
"This is the game football. Some times something happen, this is maybe football because have referees, a lot of things happen in football."
"We need to be focused on our game. We need to be focused when we have the ball and when we don't have the ball."
"And after that we would see. We need to be focused on our preparation and after that we would be ready for the game."
Currently fifth in Group C with three points, Nigeria desperately needs a win to revive its qualification hopes for the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Meanwhile, Rwanda sits at the top of the group, four points ahead of Nigeria, and will be looking to maintain its strong position.
