Sheffield Wednesday centre-back eyeing Super Eagles call-up named in Championship TOTW
Published: April 01, 2025
Sheffield Wednesday central defender Michael Ihiekwe has been named in Whoscored Championship Team of the Week after his outstanding performance during Sheffield Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Cardiff City.
Liverpool-born Ihiekwe has committed his international future to Nigeria and is hoping to get a call-up to the Super Eagles
Ihiekwe netted in successive away games for the first time in the Championship on Saturday at Cardiff City Stadium, marking his 100th appearance in the division—a milestone for the Liverpool academy graduate.
Isaak Davies put the hosts ahead in the first half, but Ihiekwe equalized for the Owls with a well-placed header from Bannan's corner just past the hour mark.
It was his second goal of the campaign, having opened his account in a 3-2 win at Norwich City on March 11.
As part of a 3-4-3 formation, he forms a central defensive trio alongside Watford pair Francisco Sierralta and Mattie Pollock.
Explaining the rationale behind his inclusion in the Championship Best XI, the EFL highlighted that he was the star performer as Sheffield Wednesday were held by Cardiff City.
The central defender made 15 clearances and won seven aerial duels to contribute towards a WhoScored.com rating of 8.26.
Now fully recovered from an Achilles injury that sidelined him for much of the first half of the season, he has played the full 90 minutes in Sheffield Wednesday's last twelve Championship matches.
Ihiekwe was teammates with Super Eagles star Semi Ajayi at Rotherham United, and also lists Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cheltenham Town, Tranmere Rovers and Accrington Stanley amongst his former clubs.
