'Has been performing well' - Sonderjyske coach wary of Russian-born striker eyeing Super Eagles call-up
Published: April 14, 2025
Speaking ahead of his side's Superliga clash with Vejle, Sonderjyske coach Thomas Norgaard admitted that he has great respect for German Onugkha, but noted that Vejle will field ten other players in the starting lineup.
Russian-born Onugkha is eligible to represent his native Russia and Nigeria but he's eyeing a call-up to the Super Eagles, having committed his international future to the three-time African champions.
Since his return to Vejle in the winter transfer market, Onugkha has been in the form of his life, and was named the Superliga Player of the Month for March.
On Monday evening, the striker visits Sydbank Park, where an exciting clash awaits against Sønderjyske in the Superliga's relegation play-off.
Sonderjyske coach Thomas Norgaard has shared his thoughts on handling the in-form striker.
"After several victories, Vejle has gained some renewed energy and faith, perhaps also through the change of coach, but they have also gained a talisman in the form of Onugkha, who has been performing well," he told bold.dk.
"Of course his teammates are looking out for him, we all know that, so our job will be to deal with the things he does well.
"You can't assume that they have a clear and distinct profile in Onugkha, but we have to remember that there will also be ten others."
FC Copenhagen loanee Onugkha has tallied eleven goals in 13 league games for Vejle so far this season.
The match between Sønderjyske and Vejle will be played on Monday evening at 1800 hours Nigerian time.
