'Exciting wingers Raphinha and Yamal' – Iwobi backs Barcelona to beat Inter Milan and Lautaro Martinez
Published: April 28, 2025
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has thrown his support behind Barcelona ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League encounter against Inter Milan on Wednesday night.
Iwobi, who has enjoyed an impressive season with Fulham, pointed to Barcelona's dynamic attacking style as a key advantage over the Italian giants.
Speaking during UEFA’s UCL Off Pitch episode 3, the Nigerian international acknowledged Inter’s defensive strength but believes Barcelona's firepower will prove decisive.
"It is tough because Inter are good, defensively they are very good. And Lautaro Martinez is a very good focal point," Iwobi said. "I am going to go Barcelona because the way they attack is scary."
The 28-year-old further revealed his admiration for Barcelona's exciting brand of football, singling out their wingers as a major source of their threat.
He praised the likes of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, while also mentioning Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo as dangerous options off the bench.
"It is free-flowing football, very attacking," Iwobi added. "They got exciting wingers in Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, even players coming off the bench like Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo."
"Going forward they are very creative and an exciting team to watch. So any defense, it is going to be a problem for them to contain those players."
When asked about his pick for the best player in this season’s Champions League, Iwobi didn't hesitate. "I am going to go Raphinha," he stated.
Iwobi's endorsement of Barcelona comes as he wraps up a standout Premier League campaign with Fulham, where he has scored nine goals and provided six assists in 34 appearances.
He now looks forward to maintaining his form heading into the Unity Cup tournament scheduled for June in London.
