Aribo, Ugochukwu help Southampton avoid worst team tag in PL history as Man City held
Published: May 10, 2025
In one of their last games in the Premier League, bottom club Southampton held Manchester City to a goalless draw at St Mary's Stadium.
Lesley Ugochukwu, nephew of retired Nigeria international Onyekachi Apam, started for the Saints but made way for Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo at halftime.
The Chelsea loanee was walking a disciplinary tightrope after he was shown a yellow card in the 43rd minute for persistent infringement on Mateo Kovacic.
Southampton confirmed after the game that Ugochukwu was replaced by the Nigeria national teamer as a precaution.
Southampton earned the crucial point they needed to reach twelve points and will no longer share the record for the worst team in Premier League history with Derby County.
Not many fans thought they would get a point against Manchester City, but they dug in, held on and fought bravely to get over the line.
In the closing seconds, Southampton came close to stealing a late win, only for substitute Cameron Archer's shot from a narrow angle to graze the outside of the post.
With the shock stalemate against Southampton, Manchester City missed out on an opportunity to go level on 67 points with Arsenal, who face newly crowned champions Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu was an unused substitute for Southampton, missing the chance to make his 25th Premier League appearance of the season.
