Confirmed: Super Falcons-eligible midfielder extends contract with Chelsea
Published: June 27, 2025
Through a statement on the official website, WSL champions Chelsea have announced that an option to extend the contract of Ashanti Akpan by a further year until 2026 has been exercised.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, Ashanti is eligible for the Super Falcons through her Nigerian father.
However, the Football Association currently lead the race for the services of the English-Polish-Nigerian player, with the midfielder provisionally cap-tied to England.
She has earned caps for the Young Lionesses at U15, U16, U17, U18, U19 and U23 level.
Ashanti is back at Chelsea after spending the whole of last season on loan at Birmingham City, where she made fifteen appearances as the Blues Women narrowly missed out on promotion to the Women's Super League.
The tri-national player has been on the books of Chelsea for twelve years, rising through the ranks to make her senior debut for Chelsea in a 3-1 victory over Reading at the quarterfinal stage of the Women’s FA Cup on March 19, 2023.
Her first involvement in a senior matchday squad came at just 16 years old when she was named on the bench for Chelsea's UEFA Women's Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
Ashanti follows Super Falcons stars Asisat Oshoala and Michelle Alozie on social media, along with Super Eagles duo Victor Osimhen and Kenneth Omeruo.
