Sevilla confirm Super Eagles striker Iheanacho will return to team training this week after illness

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho is expected to rejoin group training with Sevilla this week after recovering from a bout of indigestion that kept him sidelined for over a week.

The Nigerian international, who joined the Spanish club on a free transfer last summer, has endured a frustrating spell in Spain.

He made nine La Liga appearances last season without registering a goal or an assist before being loaned out to English Championship side Middlesbrough in January.

However, his fortunes didn’t improve in England, managing just one goal and two assists in 15 league games as Boro missed out on a playoff spot.

Returning to Sevilla for preseason with a point to prove, Iheanacho was seen training alone on Wednesday, gradually stepping up his fitness levels.

The club confirmed on its official website that the 28-year-old is expected to link up with the full squad later this week after overcoming the illness.

With Sevilla set to face Sunderland in a preseason friendly on Saturday, Iheanacho will be hoping to accelerate his recovery and put himself in contention for a spot in the squad as he aims to win over the fans.

The forward’s future at the club remains uncertain, but with Argentine coach Matías Almeyda now in charge at Sevilla, Iheanacho will be keen to impress and secure a fresh start ahead of the 2025/26 season.
