Viktoria Plzeň manager Martin Hyský has expressed his delight at the return of Nigerian forward Salim Fago Lawal from a lengthy injury layoff, describing the striker as a "winning type" who is already showing promising signs ahead of the 2026/2027 season.
Lawal joined the Czech side from Croatian club Istra 1961 during the winter transfer window but endured a frustrating start to life at the Doosan Arena after suffering an injury that sidelined him for most of the second half of the 2025/2026 campaign.
The setback limited the 23-year-old to just nine appearances across all competitions, during which he scored two goals before his progress was halted by the long-term injury.
Despite the difficult period, Hyský believes the Nigerian has returned in excellent condition and is confident he can make a significant impact once he regains full match sharpness.
"Salim was injured for three months,” he said via Euro Fotbal. “I'm glad he's back. He'll feel a lot in the final phase. I can see that he's in great shape, he's a winning type.”
The Viktoria Plzeň coach praised his mentality, movement and understanding of the game.
“He's also very good in terms of movement. He reads the game well, has a great choice of space, he's not lazy with a step. It was a great shame in the spring that he got injured. He could have continued,” he concluded.
As the Czech outfit continue preparations for the new campaign, Lawal will be eager to maintain his fitness, rediscover his best form and repay the confidence shown in him by the coaching staff with consistent performances and goals.
Meanwhile, with the club hopeful that the Nigerian forward can put his injury problems behind him and play a key role in their ambitions this season.
